Therapy Sessions
What Types of Treatments Exist?
There are many different mental health treatments for young people. Finding the right treatment depends on what is going on in your life. For example, the approach would be somewhat different for someone who is feeling really nervous about a test versus someone else who is feeling really sad about a recent death in the family. It is helpful to have a conversation with a mental health provider about what treatment is right for you.
Not all mental health treatment for young people is equally helpful. If treatments have strong scientific evidence supporting their effectiveness (meaning that multiple research studies indicate the treatment is helpful), they are referred to as “evidence-based treatments” (EBTs). Some examples of EBTs include:
- Applied Behavior Analyses (ABA)
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
- Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT)
- Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT)
- Organizational Skills Training (OST)
- Medications are also another effective treatment for some mental health issues
It is important and encouraging to recognize is that there are many helpful skills to learn and tools to use that are rooted in these treatments that can be useful to your everyday life.
